I’ve been a solo traveller since I was 24. And normally what makes me miss a country the most is not the landscape( that can count the second), it’s always people that I met on my trip. I’m definitely not the kind of chatty person or the one who always starting a conversation first. But I really love to interact with the local people or other traveller and get to know many things from them. Many things you won’t get to know from internet or guide book. And even get the help from those people.
I was literally had a relax holiday in Lombok, Indonesia this time. My original plan was to hike the Rinjani Crater which is the 2nd highest mountain in Indonesia that located in north of Lombok. Unfortunately, just 1.5 month before I arrive, there was a severe earthquake happened in Lombok (magnitude 6.3) Caused many damage and causalities. The crater close ever since, and heard about it won’t open this year. So I had to change plan at the last second.
I’m the kind of person even when I’m on holiday, I still looking for any adventure and love to explore new things. It might sounds busy but that’s the kind of travel that I love. On the hand, it gave me more time to explore the island that I thought I might not have time at the beginning.
Before I go Indonesia, I heard about the corruption of the government ( like how immigration would ask you to bribe them in order to enter the country) For me, I don’t really 100% believe what internet says. I think sometimes it’s about you’re lucky or not. That doesn’t mean everyone would have the same experience. And instead of read that many “hearsay”, I’d rather see if it’s possible to ask a local. Luckily I do have a friend who work and live in Indonesia. Even he’s a also a foreigner himself, but he gave me lots of information about this country and arouse my interested in knowing more about this country.
So here we go, I’m going to tell you the people I met in Indonesia, maybe after you read about it, you’ll put your stereotype aside, and interested in going there to travel.
1.Man who help me with custom card on the plane.
I took a red eye flight departure from Taiwan, then transfer in Kuala lumpur. So by the time when I board on the flight to Lombok, I was shattered to fall asleep. So didn’t even hear when flight attendant dispatch custom card, flight attendant just put the card on my hand. When I open my eyes have a look of the card I was like “OMG, it’s all in Indonesian on the card” How am I suppose to fill up that card. I even forgot to bring the pen this time. An Indonesian who sit next to me, he probably notice about I’m looking at him, he just hand over his pen to me right after he finished. I ask if he can speak English that can help me to complete the card. He’s really nice, even his English is not that good with strong accent. But he’s trying hard to explain to me. (Eventually, I go find a flight attendant ask if they have English version. Problem solve) Anyway, that’s my first good impression about Indonesian.
2. Staff in Sunbeam Villa
That’s the first villa I stayed. I’m the first female solo traveller they host. And the owner is nice that even upgrade my villa to the one have the private pool!! And being hospitality took me to the local bar. And his staff Firman is also a nice lad. He’s a good employee and gave me many help. He also like photography, so I share the photos that I took, and recommend him what app that I use for edit photos. ( Share photography is also one of my favourite thing to do when I travel )
3. Old grandpa took me to the hospital
I rent a scooter to explore the island when I was in Lombok. In this island only main road is tarred road, the rest of road is bumping road. Especially each road to the beach is always like. Last second day on the island, I went to Tanjung Aan again. On my way back, I ride through a steep downhill bumping road. I ride really slow as I know it’s dangerous. But already that slow when I held the brakes my tire just got slippery. Then I fell over. When I manage to stand up look down my wounds, it’s cover with blood. I tried to be calm and use the water to wash off the dirt from my wounds. Then I heard someone from the far direction, it’s an old man he running toward here and said to me: “ Miss, miss, are you ok?” And he told me to sit aside the road, took a bottle of water to wash off my wounds, then he help me to put the rental scooter to a local’s house. Then he take me to the clinic. When we get to the clinic, he told the staff to take me back to my hostel afterwards. Then he had to rush to the airport to pick up his customers.
Later on when I back to my hostel and rest. The old man came to the hostel. He said he just want to make sure if I’m doing well. I was very touched and feel like have a lump in my throat. Then I gave him some money wanted to thanks his help. But wouldn’t take it. That’s very nice of him, a stranger that giving me so much help.
4. Staffs in Botchan hostel
I stayed 3 nights in the hostel, share a dorm with other 6 backpacker. I was the only Asian in that hostel. The rest guests are western. I never a love party kind of person. I was actually spend more time to sit at the front desk talk to the staffs in the evening. Got many useful information, and how’s the local life it is. When I injured, I need some bandage and saline solution for my wounds, they even ride the scooter take me to the clinic to get what I need. The next day when I check out, need to move to next accommodation, staff is very nice to offer me a lift. As for the scooter accident, there’re some scratch, but they only charge me the money to buy a new mirror that I broken. Can’t thank them enough, makes me feel like home during my stay.
5. Harry-My surf coach.
Harry was my surf coach that I booked 2 surf lesson with him. He’s a very nice person that being patient to teach me surf technique and encourage me a lot. I actually book a SUP+snorkeling in Gili Nanggu island with his company. But it got cancelled the day before due to there’re no other person sign up for that. Harry called me ask if I really wanna to go that island? He can help me by use scooter to take me to there, but I won’t be able to SUP then. He especially told me that don’t tell his boss that he offer me this privately. Otherwise, he’ll be in trouble.( I didn’t go eventually) After I injury I had to cancel my 2nd lesson with him. Last night when I walked on the street, he ride the scooter pass me and ask me what’s going on with my legs. Then he wish me get well soon. He’s a very good coach, if you want to book a lesson with him, PM me I’ll give you his contact info.
6. Inspiration for this trip-Brendan
Thanks for this special person who inspire me to go to Indonesia. He’ve been live and work in Indonesia for while, I was so attracted by the fascinating photos about Indonesia that he post, and how he describe about this place. Given me the idea of travel to this place. Turn out to be I made the right call. And even better that he can speak Indonesian fluently, we meet up in Jakarta and explore this place together. Which I’ve been told no tourist would go there as it’s quite a boring place, notorious with it’s terrible traffic. But we still manage to visited a few places and had a great time. I think Jakarta is less boring if you have a good company. 😉
All in all, even I didn’t hike Rinjani crater, but meeting so many heartwarming people is the highlight of the entire trip. Indonesia definitely is a country that I would like to go back again one day.
